Henry STRIEBY (William, John, Hans Michael) was born on 4 JAN 1832 in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio. He died on 28 AUG 1918 in Kosciusko Co, Indiana.
Henry Strieby was a large man with flowing beard, patriarchal in appearance when the picture was taken showing the then living members of the first school class taught in Turkey Creek Twp at a reunion on Crow's Nest lawn in 1910. In the group were also Henry's brother Andrew and sister Elizabeth as well as four others, all probably related. Henry was brought as an infant to Indiana in iponeer days. As a young man he also spent some time in Ohio and states farther west. His first wife, Elizabeth Zintsmaster, who was the mother of all but one of his children also made the trek westward with her parents from Tuscarawas Co, Ohio. Henry was left with a house full of several young children when his wife died from septicemia in October 1870 (date taken from mortality records; tombstone date is October 31, 1872, afe 43 years, 3 months, 6 days). His marriage to a widow with two children of her own enabled him to keep his family together for an all too short a time of less than three years because his second wife died of scarlet fever according to the Syracuse Enterprise of April 21, 1875. So, by 1880, all of his children were married or living elsewhere except Lulu Belle, only eight months old when her mother died. Henry's fifth wife, Mary Grindle, was a widow at marriage. It is possible that she and Henry divorced as there is a Mary Strieby, born 1841 in Ohio, died June 6, 1929 in North Webster, Indiana, daughter of David Tom and Margaret Brown. At the time of her death, she was living with her daughter Sophronia (Grindle) Kline, wife of Lincoln H Kline.
Henry Strieby was the local constable in 1862 and served as Road Supervisor of district no. 4 for several years. He lived to be eighty-seven years of age so knew both old and young at Strieby reunions.
